Does anyone in this echo have any experience with the SGC SG-230 auto
ATU? I am thinking of buying one but would be interested to know what
    people think of it.

David, I have one and it has worked as advertised. I haven't used it
mobile, but it does a good job of matching ... and fast too.

Thanks, Frank, that's good enough for me. I shall send off for one today. I understand that a good earth (ground) is essential, so yesterday I prepared some copper rods to knock into the ground near the feed to my end fed wire. It's time I got some r.f. out of my QTH Hi!

Don't have one myself but have heard nothing but good reports about
them. Kinda Pricey but "You Get What you Pay For". It is a Good High
    Quality unit.

    Hi!

The one best thing that you can do to tame an end fed wire is to run a
quarter wave wire from the gnd of your antenna matcher for each band
that you use. It has to be insulated from ground but can be run
around the house, inside or out, etc. Really works.

Thanks, Dick. I am aware of that, but the problem here is that I have
very little space and want to have a go at most of the h.f. bands,
    including 160m.

Yes, 270ukp in the UK, Tom, which I think equates to around $180. It
has just arrived and looks a very fine job. I just have to build a
small control unit for it now before I put it on the air.

It seems to me that I've seen advertised, a tuneable artificial ground
just made for your purpose. ( a good RF ground).
It may have been MFJ here in the US.

Howdy, Dick. You are right. And MFJ makes one. It allows you to vary inductance and capacitance to electrically lengthen or shorten a random
    length counterpoise.

Kinda like a "negative" antenna tuner, hi.

It is MFJ that makes the "Artifical" ground.

Thanks, Dick; I will have a look through the latest QST. Just read Frank's reply also and I have an MFJ catalog somewhere so I'll see what that says about it.
