    Hi All!

    When I pay visit to:

    https://freeway.apana.org.au/

    or,

    https://sestar.synchro.net/

    ..and click on File Libraries, Chrome and Firefox want to dwonload the 00index.html files instead of opening them in the browser. Why would that be happening?

    Operator error?

    I don't know, honestly. SE Star keeps timing out when I try to connect. Been like that for the past week for me.

    Apana connected and let me create an account, but it's timing out on me now as well.

    And here I was hoping to experiment with QWK transfers....

    I can tell it to open in the browser, but then the resultant page
    does not respond to other click. Never mind. It probably requires
    a login - which is perfectly reasonable.

    SE Star has been the most reliable and responsive for me. Now,
    Vertrauen (the Synchronet home) has been a whole other story. :(
    .....but today it is responding well.

    The timing sucks, sometimes.

    I am getting timeouts for http://freeway.vkradio.com/

    Hello August,

    https://freeway.apana.org.au/

    https://sestar.synchro.net/

    I can't seem to connect either of those for some reason.

    I just tried my own site at trmb.ca and firefox opened the 00index.html as expected.

    ..and click on File Libraries, Chrome and Firefox want to dwonload
    the 00index.html files instead of opening them in the browser. Why
    would that be happening?

    Hmm.. curious. I don't have chrome installed but it seems to work for me here and also at vert.synchro.net with firefox.

    Hopefully it's just a temp thing.

    I just tried my own site at trmb.ca and firefox opened the 00index.html as expected.

    I did not realize you switched to Synch. The Message Groups page
    loads fast and quick. But the ftp:00index.html for File Libraries
    is stalling.

    Hmm.. curious. I don't have chrome installed but it seems to work for me here and also at vert.synchro.net with firefox.

    Will keep retrying.

    The current version of FireFox will not render (display) files downloaded via FTP:
    https://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2020/03/23/firefox-is-dropping-ftp-support/

    You can still download files, but those 00index.html files won't be useful to use. Just click the files and folders like you would any other FTP server and that should work fien.

    Revisiting trmb.ca, when I hover over the "File Libraries", it just shows "ftp://trmb.ca" ..and never loads anything.

    The link is the same thing at vert, but after what seems like a long time, ultimately the 00index.html content loads. But some of the navigation to other pages seems broken and fails.

    Also, sometimes when I click on [Message Groups], I get this:

    /* $Id: index.ssjs,v 1.10 2006/02/25 21:41:08 runemaster Exp $ */

    load("../web/lib/msgslib.ssjs");

    load(leftnav_html);
    if(do_rightnav)
    write_template("rightnav.inc");

    template.groups=msg_area.grp_list;

    ETC..

    After a couple of retries, the page loads OK. This problem seems more prevalent at Vert's.

    FYI, I am doing this from my replacement laptop: Win7, Firefox 82.0.2 64bit.

    Thanks. And thanks for the Firefox reference. What's the big concern that prompted to disable it? I read briefly the catch-all-word "security". What can go terribly wrong using FTP from the browser?

    Meanwhile, I have the setting: networking.ftp.enable = true ..in FF 82.0.2

    Revisiting trmb.ca, when I hover over the "File Libraries", it just shows "ftp://trmb.ca" ..and never loads anything.

    There is only one file area at trmb.ca right now. I'll get that fixed up soonish. I have to take it offline for a time and work on another issue not BBS related. Hopefully I'll have it up and running smoothly in a week or two.

    The link is the same thing at vert, but after what seems like a long time, ultimately the 00index.html content loads. But some of the navigation to other pages seems broken and fails.

    My firefox on slackware is 68.?.?. I suspect as we move up in versions I'll be having trouble with ftp also but haven't noticed yet.

    I'm thinking of using webv4 with Synchronet. That'll solve any ftp issues since it uses all http rather than ftp. ftp should still work I think, just no 00index.html support in most browsers.

    For most of us, there's no major concern. However, bad actors have, over the years and decades, used ftp as a tool in their acts. They choose FTP because it wasn't designed very well and thus it's easier (than HTTPS, especially) to either compromise or utilize in root-kits or other methods of spreading their ill will to other systems.

    I read briefly the catch-all-word "security". What
    can go terribly wrong using FTP from the browser?

    There are constant security issues in the Internet-connected world. It's a battle being fought substantially by the browser software developers. And eliminating ancient badly designed protocols makes their job (security battle) easier.

    Meanwhile, I have the setting: networking.ftp.enable = true ..in FF 82.0.2

    Yeah, but "ftp.enable" is different than "ftp.render" (I don't actually know if there's such a setting, but I'm just explaining that FTP support is different than actually parsing and displaying HTML files that are downloaded via FTP). It was a cool feature (the rendering of downloaded HTML) in browsers for 20 years, but that era is over. Hopefully we'll retain the ability to simply download files via FTP for a while longer.
