• DOS IREX under linux

    From Dumas Walker@1:2320/105 to All on Sunday, April 16, 2017 09:53:00
    Good morning,
    As the linux version of IREX seems to depend on older packages that are no longer available and therefore is difficult, if not impossible, to get
    working, has anyone ever tried successfully to get the DOS version of IREX working under dosemu or dosbox?

    I still use IREX under OS/2 for the following:

    1) two nodes that I exchange mail with via ftp (one ftn, one qwk);
    2) one node that I exchange qwk mail with via email;
    3) various listservs that I port onto my bbs

    I have been in the process of migrating my DOS BBS over to run under dosemu
    but have not yet figured out how to replace these three functions of IREX.

    For ftp, I can write a script BUT I am not so certain how to make sure the scripts will delete what is sent, or to make sure they don't delete files on
    my end if there is a transfer or connection failure.

    For 2 and 3, I do run synchronet as one of my bbses, but my ISP blocks port
    25 in and out. I could use the 25<>587 service at vert, but I fear the 200+ messages the listservs generate per day might be abusive. Also, I am not
    sure how I would exchange qwk mail via email using the synchronet email services.

    Ideas are appreciated. :)

    Mike

    It's not "impossible" to get working under newer Linux distros. You
    just use IP addresses instead of FQDNs.

    It will not even fire up on my linux machine. I keep getting "segmentation faults." My understanding is that is because of the missing, old
    dependencies. I don't think it has anything to do with using ip addresses
    vs. FQDNs.

    I would not mind installing the required, old packages if (1) I knew what
    they were, and (2) they would not break anything else that runs on the
    machine. From experience, I suspect #2 is not a reasonable expectation.
