    Hey All!

    We got penguins. Also brought the kernel up to date;

    :r /proc/version
    Linux version 6.1.7 (root@amyii) (gcc (GCC) 12.2.0, GNU ld (GNU Binutils) 2.40) #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Mon Jan 23 19:57:49 UTC 2023

    Also, also got sound working and added a fbdev2 mplayer so that xorg isn't required. I tested it with an avi I happen to have handy on a usb flashdisk and it played fullscreen HD (1920x1080) without any issues. 4:3 resolution is 1440x1080 on the laptop's 14" monitor.

    Anything else?

    Life is good,
    Maurice

    I still don't get penguins on boot up. I'm using slackware's grub to boot.

    Did you do anything special to get penguins. Not that it matters, I just like penguins. :)

    I still don't get penguins on boot up. I'm using slackware's grub
    to boot.

    Legacy or (u)efi? I haven't checked out slackware's grub. On the one legacy boot (32-bit grub) I can't get penguins to work either. :-/

    Did you do anything special to get penguins.

    Yes. The three boots that work, including the laptop, I am doing uefi boots with 64-bit grub. It took some doing but was worth the effort especially on this particular machine.

    Not that it matters, I just like penguins. :)

    What do you think of the ascii penguins now part and parcel of WeBeBashing?

    The machine I have lfs on currently is legacy. I used to be able to choose to boot in bios mode or efi but not anymore, it's bios boot only.

    My BBS machine is the opposite. It is efi only, there is no option for bios boot. That machine complains about missing fonts and it's doesn't look right but I just hit enter and it boots up fine.

    My laptop is also efi only but it looks good and boots up without any complaints. I'm not sure what the difference is.

    Did you do anything special to get penguins.

    Yes. The three boots that work, including the laptop, I am doing uefi boots with 64-bit grub. It took some doing but was worth the effort especially on this particular machine.

    I plan to put lfs on my BBS machine so I'll need to get that right.

    I have some oneliners that could potentially help. Most of them were gleemed from an archlinux howto.

    Possibly your kernel doesn't know you want to see them.

    I'm using slackware's grub to boot.

    Very unwise (syslinux is much better), but it shouldn't affect them.

    Hey Alan!

    Please do.

    The archlinux howto - a very worthwhile read - can be had at;

    https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Unified_Extensible_Firmware_Interface

    The commands below are from the perspective of a chrooted nvme disk from a sata boot. The opposite will also apply to a properly partitioned and formatted sata disk chrooted to from a booted nvme disk. Having two differing disks is what makes this idea even better.

    --- ye olde cut and paste starts ---
    mkfs.vfat /dev/nvme0n1p1
    install -dv /boot/{efi,grub}
    mount -v -t vfat /dev/nvme0n1p1 /boot/efi

    grub-install --bootloader-id=ZNVER2_NVME --recheck

    cat > /etc/default/grub << "EOF"
    GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_UUID=true
    GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_PARTUUID=false GRUB_GFXMODE=3840x2160x32,2560x1440x32,1920x1080x32,1280x800x32,1024x768x32,800x600x32,auto
    GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep
    GRUB_TERMINAL_OUTPUT="gfxterm"
    EOF

    grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
    --- ye olde cut and paste ends ---

    I REALLY need to get my grubby act together but the above does work on 3 machines here (not the BBS) which is an older machine without a proper m.2 socket for nvme disks.

    I just booted AlienBOB's slackware64-15.0-livecd to practice my
    make-foo a bit on the laptop before I move to the BBS machine.

    Excellent idea. However I believe he is using syslinux to kick start the live system. It definetly worked here but I never tested it on the BBS which is a bios based grub.cfg.

    I got penguins (4 of them) there.

    Note the four ascii penguins below. Same with the laptop and the EuroPoint which are both uefi.

    I have been meaning to look at syslinux for years but I just haven't gotten to it. Once I get the kernel built I am going to grab the source and give it a try and see how it goes.

    Thanks for the info. I was looking at that when I last installed grub and was able to get booted but the uefi stuff still seems mysterious to me.

    I resemble that remark. Heck I still have the original backup of lilo.conf from the original CompactFlash disks in the late 1990s. 1998-ish or so. I don't recall if it had boot penguin(s).
