    From Tony Comandini@2:250/5 to All on Friday, January 06, 2017 22:33:22
    Hi Guys,
    anybody of you use the NNTP option in MBSE? According with the documentation I configured it on mbsetup, but need something else to run the port 119.

    Looking on my netstat -tulpna the port 119 still not open and of course there is no connection with the server when I try to connect with a client.

    Any suggestion?

    MbseBBS is your NNTP and you can ask you isp for newgroup connection, then in mbsebbs echos put and check nae for the messages and use some extra echos where
    you fetch for newsgroups at your isp or some other news provider. But you have too to tell mbse the info for the news providers.

    The to get port 119 open for nntp check you system for service port 119 is open
    and is on.

    Take care,
    Gert

    2) Put the data in mbsetup
    3) Add the newgroup name for each message area
    4) Add a new message group called News (for example) and add the interested messages areas;
    5) restart mbsebbs (just in case)
    6) netstat -tulpna|grep 119 and check if port 119 is open.
    Correct?

    I think I made a mistake:
    following commands:
    cd ~/mbsebbs-1.0.6
    ./configure [--enable-optimize] [--enable-newsgate] [--enable-gdkdel] make
    su important, do not use "su -"
    password: enter root password here
    make install
    exit
    Ubuntu users should do:
    cd ~/mbsebbs-1.0.6
    ./configure [--enable-optimize] [--enable-newsgate] [--enable-gdkdel]
    make
    sudo make install
    Important: it seems logical to use the --enable-newsgate option but it isn't. When you do, the mbnntp program is disabled and you cannot serve echomail as news to your users via internet. But you can gate echomail to the internet. Independent of your choice, you can always make internet news available for your bbs users. Only use --enable-newsgate if you really need to gate echomail to the internet.

    Unfortunately I had just run ./configure without option and probably the newsgate is off...I have to recompile everything from scratch?

    Thank you Gert, so if I well understand:
    1) Create an account with your ISP or the news server suggested by
    Vince;
    Yes but most ISP should by your email account have a news server for free to you together with email account, or you can get it by Vince.

    2) Put the data in mbsetup
    Then get some info on the newsgroup by name and put the the news servers info in mbsetup and add the newsgroup to your echomail setup.

    3) Add the newgroup name for each message area
    You can too make a news group name for you your echomails messages areas like mbse for fido is fido.mbse and for your own nntp use like example (bbsname).mbse

    4) Add a new message group called News (for example) and add the
    interested messages areas;
    It will be more like new messages group called Newsgroup and add the interested
    newsgroups.

    5) restart mbsebbs (just in case)
    Yes. Mbse should automatic self fetch mail and newsgroups if you want to get the wanted newsgroups then run 'mbfido ne' to get the news in to your areas and
    watch it be done and then check system.log and then when working run 'mbfido news -l' the will take the latest news in and tell mbsebbs of what is got home as option -l is learn for mbse.

    6) netstat -tulpna|grep 119 and check if port 119 is open.
    Correct?

    Something in this will I think. You can too check the config file services in /etc/services and then the mbsebbs file /etc/init.d/ and /conf.d/ for you have mbsebbs set to act as nttp server too.

    Take care,
    Gert

    If you only do the default ./configure without any options is mbsebbs run to could fetch newsgroup and not working as a nntp server, so you have to recompile mbsebbs use option for to --enable-newsgate and it is showing how and
    waht to do in the mbsebbs readme files.
