• WIN7 Maximus?

From Russell Tiedt@5:7105/1 to All on Thursday, June 23, 2011 16:55:20
    Hello everybody.

Any one compiled a version of Maximus to run under WIN7?

I might be forced to abandon my Linux BBS box due to old age and lack of funds to replace it ...

Ran Maximus before and liked it ...

I know this is old but I just happen to be playing with the UNIX port of Maximus this week. I played with the code briefly under Cygwin but I eventually changed my mind about working on it in Windows and did it in
Linux. It compiled after some coaxing, but there are serious problems with
the MEX compiler. The README alludes to this (still unresolved) issue, so
I'm tempted to try fixing it. I wanted to learn yacc and how to use GDB anyway.

By the way, I'm playing with the 3.03b tar.gz files from Sourceforge. That *IS* the latest version of the source code, isn't it?

That is, as far as I know.

    Hello everybody.

Any one compiled a version of Maximus to run under WIN7?

I have successfully compiled Maximus under Windows XP.

I comprehensively updated the "MaximusSourceDoc.doc" build instructions back in
2008 but have not committed the new version to sourceforge. You can get the documentation here: "http://users.tpg.com.au/mdsl/tmp/MaximusSourceDoc.doc". It
    details everything you need.

Building the Maximus DOS, OS/2 and Win32 binaries require proprietary libraries. I have prepared a "redistributable" archive that contains everything
required to build Maximus on Windows (2.63 gigabytes). Let me know if you want it ("mvanle@users.sourceforge.net").

I am sure it will compile successfully under WIN7.

I made some minor modifications to 3.02 eg, changed logfile time & date format to include the year, version numbers to 3.02.1 etc but have not gone further due to lack of C programming skills. A guy named Bo Simonsen said it took him 6
months to get his head around the SLIBs (main Maximus libraries). I suppose I could put more time & effort into developing Maximus but I have more profitable
    things to do atm.

Maximus was made to run under DOS and OS/2. I recommend running anything related to a BBS under Windows XP because everything works well in its NTVDM (doors, games, telnet servers, virtual modems etc).

I might be forced to abandon my Linux BBS box due to
old age and lack of funds
    to replace it ...

Maximus is the best BBS software in the world !

Compiling under Windows requires the proprietary Watcom C/C++ Version 10 and 11c libraries (Open Watcom will not work). I have assembled a distribution archive of all the build tools necessary to compile Maximus 3.02 (2.63 gb) under windows. I successfully compiled the DOS, OS/2 and Win32 binaries and tested some minor code changes in 2006.

Let me know if you want the build tools (mvanle@users.sourceforge.net).

Althought I appreciate the efforts to port Maximus to Linux, I firmly believe that development of the DOS and Win32 versions would be more worthwhile because
the best programs written for BBSes are for DOS.

What would you need support for ? You already know how to run a BBS.

I can't believe you could be that naive.. so you must be joking, right?

If you're not joking, remind me not to run any software you've modified, etc.

    I never joke.

The DOS, OS/2 and Win32 versions of Maximus are extremely stable and is all that anybody needs. If people want to run Maximus on Linux, they can use VMware, which is equally rock solid.
