Greets to all in the almost new year...

Just wondering what folks are listening to in the realm of "progressive rock" these days. Myself, I'm a long-time Rush fan...as well as Jethro Tull and Yes.

However I recently got a subscription to Slacker Radio and they have a lovely prog rock channel. Which introduced me to whole new world of prog rock like Porcupine Tree, OSI, Muse, Spock's Beard, Gentle Giant and so much more I never knew even existed.

This isn't meant to be an advert for Slacker but...haven't come across many stations online or off that have a prog rock channel.

I am currently obsessed with Porcupine Tree's "Deadwing" album. Just wondering if anyone else has some suggestions for me?

Thanks..happy new year and all that..

    Hi Rob:

Sorry for the false message...Experimenting with an Amiga emulator an my old favourite telecom program and running into "issues"...heh.

King Crimson...classic. ELP is also great. Never could quite get into Dream Theatre for some reason, although I think DT people were involved with OSI who I quite like.

Rush's final (?) album "Clockwork Angels" is really good...a nice return to their prog-rock story telling roots.

I've also been listening to Ian Anderson's sort-of solo work. "Homo Erraticus" is just plain awesome. "Thick as a Brick 2" is quite good as well. But you have to keep in mind that Ian has a vocal sound-alike singing with him doing all the high notes...a cheat I guess. And he didn't treat Doan and Martin very well when he fired them.

"Images and Words" is pretty damn good heavy-prog album from them, a classic nowadays and might represent their best work. I did buy their self-titled 2013 album and liked it a lot too.

Definitely. And I really liked Snakes and Arrows too.

    That's a frequent story among the singer/divas. :-(

Ah..I see I need to update that old .sig. Forgot about that!

What do you think about Porcupine Tree? I've been needlessly obsessed with the "Deadwing" album for some reason. I keep going back to "Arriving Somewhere, Not Here."

"Snakes and Arrows" was really good. I think "Vapor Trails" was great too..only because we were lucky the band got back together after Neil's tragedies. Speaking of which...Vapor Trails is kind of the audio counterpart to Neil Peart's "Ghost Rider" book. The tarot cards in the liner are explained in the book. Quite a good read too. I enjoyed Neil's trip across Canada to the arctic circle and down to Mexico. The drum-solo opening to "One Little Victory" is kind of like Neil telling the world he's back.

Oddly enough on Slacker there is a re-issue of Vapor Trails that I absolutely hate. They re-mixed all the songs and I really hate the end result. Not sure what the hell they were thinking with that one.

My brother is a big fan of them. I really like Gavin's drumming, but haven't really gotten in the albums that much.

I agree with all of that (yeah, read the book too).

Totally disagree on that one. Vapor Trails was a horrible mix/master, overly compressed (dynamically) and sonically harsh. I *much* prefer the mixmaster. You can actually hear Geddy's awesome bass work on One Little Victory. A/B the two versions of the songs and I think you'll come to the same conclusion. There are full parts of the songs that now stand out as "new" to me that were completely buried in the mix before. I love it.

Are you sure about that? :-)

Ok I think I fixed that signature. We've been on matrix.org/riot.im stuff for a while. Not that it matters..we have no subscribers. Internet!!

I haven't read Neil Peart's other book, the one where he cycled across Africa. I really need to pick that one up.

I recently found Chris Squire's solo album "Fish Out Of Water." What a great album. I still can't believe they booted Jon Anderson from Yes.

Yeah, he has a few books out.

I agree. Though Jon Anderson, when seen/heard live, always reminds me of Joe Pesci for some reason! :-)

I've heard several interviews with him but I only realized now that yes, he actually DOES sound like Joe Pesci. The last one I heard he was talking about the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and how he thought the band would kiss and make up for that. Not sure if it ever happened...Jann Wenner hates prog rock. His loss I guess. I liked the way Billy Corgan indirectly called him an "old douchebag" in that Rush documentary however.

(the best part of that documentary was the end credits with Neil, Alex and Geddy getting very drunk)

Beyond the Lighted Stage is great. The more recent Rush-doc (Time Stand Still) just makes me sad. :-(

Yeah, which when juxstaposed with the AA emblem on some of his road gear made me go, huh?

There was another documentary? I need to watch that one. I really enjoyed the last one.

It was kind of sad that the best they had of John Rutsey was a telephone interview in the last documentary. Although I did really enjoy the "rec room" 1970's video of Rush.
