I used my old hard disk in the new system and the eventual "system crawl" problem starting re-appearing and everything I tried couldn't eliminate the problem, so I installed a new hard disk and installed a fresh copy of Windows (Millenium Edition).

Everything appears to be snappy again. <sigh>
