    From Elwyn Goldsbury@3:771/160 to Sean Dennis on Saturday, December 28, 2002 22:07:52
    anyone care to refresh my memory on Com port numbers and handle numbers

    I have a problem with my 12 year old OS2 BBS -- ive connected it to internet as I want to give up the dial connection -- created
    a new Maximus window using COM4 and have SIO /VMODEM loaded and going Connection over ethernet using TCPIP works just fine with upload/ download
    / off line readers etc also working ok

    BUT when the above is fired up my dial users can no longer download their mail -- they fail with a message as follows
    " 20 Dec 22:33:15 MAX Return from: "maxpipe.exe 3 zip -jk -b -4 d:\ziptmp
    D:\Mail\Olr\node03\GENBOARD.qwk D:\Mail\Olr\node03\*.* d:\mail\olr\*"
    20 Dec 22:33:15 MAX Archiver error (errorlevel 255)"

    for some reason the TCPIP VMODEM connetion is interfering with the dialed in user - if I close down the TCPIP MAXIMUS session and close down VMODEM then dial in returns to full function again

    Hi Elwyn,

    Long time no chat...

    " 20 Dec 22:33:15 MAX Return from: "maxpipe.exe 3 zip -jk -b -4 d:\ziptmp
    D:\Mail\Olr\node03\GENBOARD.qwk D:\Mail\Olr\node03\*.* d:\mail\olr\*"
    20 Dec 22:33:15 MAX Archiver error (errorlevel 255)"

    I can't be 100% sure (its been a LONG time since I saw that message ), but this
    rings bells with me regarding a SHARING problem. Is something hard configured to look for a specific COM port or BBS LINE no. somewhere? Or perhaps the BBS line no. is not being passed through.

    Good luck...........pk.

    Hello, Elwyn!

    Replying to a message of Elwyn Goldsbury to Sean Dennis:

    BUT when the above is fired up my dial users can no longer
    download their mail -- they fail with a message as follows "
    20 Dec 22:33:15 MAX Return from: "maxpipe.exe 3 zip -jk -b -4
    d:\ziptmp D:\Mail\Olr\node03\GENBOARD.qwk D:\Mail\Olr\node03\*.* d:\mail\olr\*" 20 Dec 22:33:15 MAX Archiver error (errorlevel 255)"

    Hmm... here's my SIO setup in CONFIG.SYS:

    DEVICE=C:\SIO\SIO.SYS (COM1:38400,3F8,IRQ4,-) (COM2:57600,INTERNET:2F8,NONE:3,-) (COM3:57600,INTERNET:3E8,NONE:4,-) (COM4:57600,INTERNET:2E8,NONE:3,-)
    DEVICE=C:\SIO\VSIO.SYS
    DEVICE=C:\SIO\VX00.SYS

    Also, here's what I have for the archiver:

    Archiver ZIP
    Extension ZIP
    Ident 0,504b0304 ; "PK^c^d"
    OS2 Add zip -9Dj %a %f
    OS2 Extract unzip -Csoj %a %f
    End Archiver

    That works fine here for both dialup and telnet connections.

    Later,
    Sean

    Hi Elwyn,

    my log file for the dial session looks like this

    + 31 Dec 18:31:02 MAX Begin, v3.01 (task=3)
    ! 31 Dec 18:31:02 MAX SYS0089: Cannot open com port (handle 3)
    ! 31 Dec 18:31:02 MAX Communications driver not properly installed
    + 31 Dec 18:42:54 *LOG Spawning BBS: 115200 33600 3 1440 /Arq/V34/Lapm
    + 31 Dec 18:42:54 *LOG maxp -b33600 -p3 -n03 -
    l\bbs\logs\max03.log max.prm

    I think this may be your prblem right here... The HANDLE number (3) looks to be
    too low to be a true handle. Maxp 3.01 COM port handle no.'s usually start around 5 or 6 and upwards. A handle of 3 is more like an actual (virtual) COM port no. (COM3). Do you have this value hard coded somewhere?

    My SPAWNBBS.CMD line used to pass from Binkley to Maximus looks like this -
    Maxp max -b%2 -p%3 -t%4 -n%TASK% -lMax%TASK%.log -s38400
    where -p%3 is the handle for the COM port passed from Binkley. Your telnet node
    has to do something similar, but using the handle from Vmodem (whatever that might be). Check the Vmodem docs on exactly what is required here.

    I used to have ">> MAXSP.LOG" appended to the end of that line so I had a log of the actual values passed, but its not currenty on there so I can't advise what actual values I get at the moment.

    Good luck..............pk.
