• Pascal availability

From Jame Clay@1:120/546 to Andy Ball on Monday, November 07, 2011 18:43:16
    Andy,

Sadly Pascal seems to be greatly undervalued these days.
gpc appears to have been left to rot.

It is, however, available on Debian Linux...

    There's FreePascal though,

    Also available on Debian.

    which makes me think
I should set up a Linux machine and perhaps buy a book on it.
I'm no sure what libraries that would give me access to.

You mean, associated with the compiler install? As a for instance, the following "units" packages are available for Free Pascal on Debian: fp-units-fv, fp-units-multimedia, fp-units-gnome1, fp-units-fcl, fp-units-base,
    fp-units-gfx, fp-units-gtk, fp-units-gtk2, fp-units-i386, & fp-units-misc.

I sometimes think about trying my hand at it again but it's been a _long_ time since I did anything with Pascal...

I'm thinking of things like Curses and perhaps PostgresSQL.

    Andy,

I'm not sure what libraries that would give me access
    to.

You mean, associated with the compiler install?

I'm thinking of things like Curses

Support for NCurses is, for instance, available in the fp-units-base package in Debian [1]...

    and perhaps PostgresSQL.

The current fp-units-db package in Debian [2] for Free Pascal supports that one as well as others...

Thanks Jame, I'll have to look for a book on FreePascal.

Thanks Jame, I'll have to look for a book on FreePascal.

IIRC, there is ONE book out on FPC... it was originally written in german because that's where that author and developer reside... i'm not sure on the status of the translations to other languages...

FPC has a support website with forums but i prefer to use their mailing lists as i find their forum software hard to deal with...
