I'm sitting on about 30GB of raw measured data and
develop modelling software for processing that into
something useful. In a second thread I'm writing the
PhD thesis (something like 50 pages exist so far). The
software is basically working now, so I hope to be able
to finish the whole thing soon.

I don't have enormous time for developing either, I'm B.Sc. student
in Computer Science.

When will your exam be? Do you already consider going
for a MSc after that?

Well I just need to take 75 ECTS point of mandatory courses (don't know if you calculate in the same system, but 30 ECTS ~ a semester, if you are a normal student and not a very very intelligent person :-)).

And definately, I'll be taking the M.Sc. if the student grants and time allows it (I shall not fail many courses before my student grant doesn't fit).

No, actually not.
Hardly anything can be done in a physics lab without the aid of computers nowadays. I have four machines in the lab for controlling the experiment and data acquisition alone. Of course there are quite different approaches to controlling an experiment or evaluating measured data. If I had to rebuild things from scratch today, maybe I would go for LabView and MathLab or something like that. But I have "inherited" some equipment and software in a usable state from colleagues, so I cling to that and extend it with some Java software of mine.

We didn't have a point system when I was studying. I guess it's about to be introduced these days to make it easier to change universities across Europe.

The BaS/MaS is something really new here in Germany. I guess this is the first year that a new student can enrole for it here in Hannover. We'll have to see how this all works out in some years.

time allows it (I shall not fail many courses before my student grant doesn't fit).
