    Howdy!,

Tonight (and also a few days ago) the Firewall I use asked to allow an
IP Address I was unsure about, so I clidked the NO button.

The IP Address says it was for a Microsoft Application Error Report.

I put the IP Address in DuckDuckGo to see what the Results of my Search
would be and both times (tonight and the other day) I saw the Address was
    owned by Microsoft Azure.

AFAIK, I don't 'think' I have Azure on this XP pc.

I use OpenOffice instead of the product(s) from Microsoft.

I'll never be a Mister Know-It-All with this kind of stuff showing up
on the Desktop of my pc.

    Thanks In Advance,
    Ed

Later: I Searched Wikipedia for "Azure".
The Result List had "Microsoft Azure" and "Mozilla Azure".
Wikipedia's Mozilla Azure page says it is used with Firefox.

Even though the description in the firewall window said "Microsoft",
I just ain't the trusting type, that's why I chose the NO Button.

If I check a IP Address and learn it is for a reliable web site, I write
it on a list so the next time the firewall asks about that address I know
that I can click the YES button and allow the connection.

Even though I don't 'think' I have any MS Azure software on this XP box,
the next time either of those two IP Addresses that I've already checked,
ask for access to the internet I will click the YES button so MS will
get whatever report my pc wants to send to them.

I have some other IP Addresses on my list already to let me know they are
safe for me to send a report to Microsoft.

I began using the internet in 1996.
But because I have read BBS Messages (since 1984) about tricks some people
do over the internet I got paranoid, and I try to be "very very" careful.

After I turn a MS Windows pc ON I usually don't use it until after I've
updated the Definitions for the 'Watchdog' programs I use on my pc,
i.e.: AntiVirus, Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot S&D and Winpatrol.

I don't have to do that when I turn the Power Switch on the C=64 ON.....

It doesn't take that much time for the Windows pc to do the updates,
and I feel better after I've done the updates, that maybe the 'baddies'
won't get access to my computer (this time).

    You never will. :)

I began using the internet in 1996.

I started using it in 1983 when it was still ARPANET. I had this gigantic UUCP email address that was three lines long. Thought it was neat but moved and lost access.

But because I have read BBS Messages (since 1984) about tricks some
people do over the internet I got paranoid, and I try to be "very
    very" careful.

Right now, running XP is a giant, screaming, oozing security hole. You're not being careful in that respect.

As an IT professional, I'm telling you you're asking for it running XP. As a friend, I'd recommend moving up to Windows 10 when you can (you can still get it for free).

If you have issues getting W10, let me know and I will send you a legal (but non-registered) working copy of W10 on a USB stick that you can plug in and set up on your computer assuming it can run W10 on its hardware. There's a bunch of silly telemetry stuff that you have to turn off but there's fast and easy ways to do that.

If you have a legal Windows 7 or 8 key, that will work to register W10 with the same version of WinX that you are using (Home, Pro, et cetera).

After I turn a MS Windows pc ON I usually don't use it until after
I've updated the Definitions for the 'Watchdog' programs I use on my
pc, i.e.: AntiVirus, Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot S&D and Winpatrol.

If you are using multiple antiviral software packages on your computer, you are going to have serious issues. Only use one antiviral software; the spyware stuff may conflict with each other also.

All of that software should automatically update. You should never have to do that task yourself if the software is configured correctly.

It doesn't take that much time for the Windows pc to do the updates,
and I feel better after I've done the updates, that maybe the
'baddies' won't get access to my computer (this time).

If you're running a modern version of Windows, have your Windows Firewall configured correctly as well as your router's firewall, use antiviral/malware software correctly, and are careful where you go on the Web, you're fine.

All of my Windows machines update automatically with the security software whenever they're turned on and normally will check every 24 hours for updates unless the provider pushes out a mandatory update.

I try not to be stupid, just careful.

That tagline wasn't chosen by me, I promise.

If the Firewall asks permission to send something out, AND I'm not familiar with the IP Address, I go to my list to see if I have already confirmed

if it isn't I do a little research - which may mean asking about it in a

those should update automatically and you should be fine to use the machine before during or after their updates...

I use the Free version, so manually updating Definitions is required to
    keep me happy.

The only 'Watchdog' program I haven't seen a Definition (or Version) Update
    is Winpatrol.
I don't check it daily as I do the others since when I've last checked
their web page nothing has changed.
Their "Newsletter" hasn't been changed since July 2018 iirc.

I don't have to do that when I turn the Power Switch on the C=64
    ON.....

    they're a non-target... XP is a known easy target...

I know Microsoft doesn't care for XP users.
I don't care to purchase another pc, as long as I can turn the power ON
    this one.

I recently got a notice from Mozilla Firefox that they will not be updating Firefox for XP or Vista.

I've played some with Ubuntu and a little bit with Mint.
Mozilla updates Firefox for Ubuntu the last time I looked at U'u.

I'd wish Microsoft would allow someone other than themselves to create
    Updates for their unsupported products.
They pay their lawyers, so that will never happen, tho I wish they would.

The last time I looked at a J. C. Whitney auto parts catalog (many years ago) parts for Ford Model T automobiles were available.

It has been a long time since the last Model T came off the Ford Assembly
    Line.

I am beginning to learn some Parts for the Van I drive are not made anymore.
    I still drive it.

It doesn't take that much time for the Windows pc to do the updates,
and I feel better after I've done the updates, that maybe the
'baddies' won't get access to my computer (this time).

it will always be a chase game... you cannot stop what you do not know about and if they come up with a new way in that nothing detects,
    well...

I know there are some folks that enjoy making Malware, but I like having
a DSL connection so I can Log On a BBS, or do other surfing.

I'm sure one of these days, a Malware writer will write something this XP pc isn't aware of, but I hope not very soon.

If it happens, I won't be reading and writing messages on any BBS, ...
unless I learn of a Local Dial-Up BBS.

I moved to a place nearer to where I worked, 20+ miles away from Town.
On my Heathkit Sixer there was one Ham I could chat with in the area.
So I used CW and AM on HF most of the time.

The installation I worked at was being shut down and I got transferred to
a job in Town so moved back to Town to be closer to my new workplace.

After getting back in Town I could talk to more Hams on the Sixer.

But because I have read BBS Messages (since 1984) about tricks some

    I'm a Computer Hobbyist.
I tell the people who I talk to about their computers that My Knowledge is
just a little bit above the Kindergarten Level. .... ..

I don't own a pc newer than Vista.
I don't use it as frequently as I do the XP pc.
I do turn on the Vista more often than I do the C=64 pc.

After I turn a MS Windows pc ON I usually don't use it until after
I've updated the Definitions for the 'Watchdog' programs I use on my

If you are using multiple antiviral software packages on your computer, you are going to have serious issues. Only use one antiviral software; the spyware stuff may conflict with each other also.

I only use one antivirus program, Avast!, along with those other programs.

All of that software should automatically update. You should never
have to do that task yourself if the software is configured correctly.

As I mentioned to Mark, I'm too Cheap to pay if a Free product is offered.
So I Update the Definitions Myself.

It doesn't take that much time for the Windows pc to do the updates,
and I feel better after I've done the updates, that maybe the

    the Web, you're fine.

I would still be using Windows 98 SE if My Brother hadn't asked me to go
look at this HP XP MCE pc model and tell Him what I thought of it.
I told Him that it looked good to me.

I liked the specifications so much that I bought one of those HP XP MCE pc
a few weeks later in 2006.

I thought it would be O.K. in 2006 to start using a "Modern" computer since lots of people in this Echo were having good experiences with their XP pc's.

The Price of the HP pc was reasonable for me to buy, it was a lot cheaper
that what I paid to have the DOS 5.0 486DX33 pc built for me back in 1994.

Iirc XP computers started selling about 2001 (???) ..--..

All of my Windows machines update automatically with the security
software whenever they're turned on and normally will check every 24
hours for updates unless the provider pushes out a mandatory update.

Since I got the most recent Version of Malwarebytes, I noticed that it
will grab a Definition Update automatically when I turn the power On and
begin to use the pc each day.

I try not to be stupid, just careful.

That tagline wasn't chosen by me, I promise.

I wouldn't have minded if You had chose it.
If I don't like the Tagline MM picks out I look through the list for

I have MM set to select a Random Tagline, but "I" decide which one goes with
