    My system is running mystic/mis as a normal non root user (mystic).
    Mis is started automaticaly (not as a deamon) when the GUI (Fluxbox
    on Centos) comes up. I also have 5 Dos based doors running via dosemu.

    Global War
    Tradewars 2002
    Stackem (As listed in the unix.install.txt file)

    LORD 2

    thats great dude. so you know i also have mis working non root on an
    older distro and anther one. for whatever reason debian 5 and mis wouldnt run dos binary.

    yes setcap can allow you to run it on higher ports non root..

    fyi ty.

    Except you know, the multiple systems who are doing what you con say isn't possible and have been for a while... :)
    There is nothing to document, that isn't already in the document.
    Nothing has changed in the way you should execute MIS.

    It works on my 3 systems, Gryphon has came up and said it works for him, and I know several others are running as non-root too. Just because you can't get it working doesn't mean its broken.

    I've been running MIS as a user since I started Orbit back in November of last year. Never had a problem with it not doing what it's supposed to.

    let me remind you that last time you told me someone got mis working with dosemu. i have more then good reason, because it was impossible, and
    since you deleted all the threads their really is not a point in me
    saying anything on source forge since it didnt support pty. you dont
    mind if i stand up for myself do you, i mean i even want to donate to
    your cause and you wouldnt even accept it.

    Stand up for yourself? No one was even talking to you; you just chimed in and started saying how nothing works and complaining about documentation, etc,
    etc.

    The "last time" I also sent you screenshots of it working in your own distro, and you still claim it was impossible... LOL

    You did this same shit with archivers. Claiming that they're broken all
    while refusing to stop using these trainwreck scripts from 1999 instead of the recommended settings.

    5+ systems have now been mentioned here as having it working, and a 6th who

    Maybe during initial install there's some manual configuration, but it doesn't really take any longer than installing Windows or Ubuntu timewise. It's just more of a text based installation rather than a GUI one.

    you should scroll back and read what i've said, older versions of mis work. current version doesnt debian 5. i've actually been around a few different people trying to get it working and i also sent you all the information i have.

    as i already mentioned i emailed everyone the most up to date files for dosemu
    so needless to say that most of it was freely distrbuted online already. Even more reason to have documention so different people dont have to keep doing
    the same damn thing over again.

    P.S. If bbslogin is using chroot, doesn't that means its running as root not a BBS user like you keep claiming?

    no it switched to bbs user. also if i understand correctly chroot just greats

    I'm not sure what's going on there, but if the BBS user is trying to

    than /root/.dosemu.

    Did you by chance mess with dosemu.conf at all? This really seems like a permissions issue.

    ign and I spoke about it on IRC to try ot figure out what was going on. Turns out it's actually an openSUSE specific kind of issue where they default sudo
    to always_set_home, so by him running sudo as his bbs user to run mis to get root to bind, $HOME would change to /root instead of remaining where it was.

    That was one of a few problems anyway. :)

    The main difference with Archlinux is that after you install, you have a barebones command line system with a package manager. After that, you add what YOU want, not what they think you want. :)

    So a simple:

    pacman -S xorg [gnome/kde/fluxbox/whatever]

    Will get you X and a desktop environment of your choice in about 5 minutes or less, depending on whether you install kde or fluxbox (big meta packaged desktop environment compared to a very small lightweight window manager).

    I switched to Ubuntu because it had SDL2 at the time, when most others didn't.

    Looks like:

    pacman -S sdl2

    wants to install sdl2 and all it's dependencies. :)

    pacman -Syu

    updates your entire system.

    pacman -Rsu

    removes package(s) and it's dependencies as well as any unneeded packages (if dependencies weren't removed but a package was at some point).

    The list goes on.. But it's short and sweet and to the point. I don't have anything on here that's not being used. :)

    now) and Suse.

    All full blown desktop environment systems.

    I even tried to build a Gentoo system several years ago and got it going...but never finished it.

    Arch is basically like Gentoo, except you don't have to compile your entire system (which on and off with having shit to do and work and all that can end up being a few days). You basically install the same way you would with Gentoo (yet still no compiling).. You manually set your fstab, mirrorlists, and a few other things.. then you're left with a base/core system with a package manager and a few other things like a kernel, compiler, libs to start with, etc.

    After that, the world (or your OS) is yours. You install what you want, when you want to. All binary packages so installation of anything is super fast. Automatic kernel updates (again, no compiling) that only require a reboot to boot into the new kernel)..

    For one, I've always been one to build my system from the ground up (I was a Gentoo fanboy for about a decade, and boy am I glad I found Arch.. lol). I don't like installing stuff like Ubuntu, or SuSE, or Fedora, or any of those that come with software that I probably don't want, already installed. So far it has been the least stressful Linux OS I have ever used.

    After the years of Gentoo, I got annoyed with compiling everything and things taking hours when it could take seconds. It wasn't worth my time especially when I wasn't changing the ebuilds or compile options to make things system specific (like Gentoo promotes) anyways.

    The last OS I used before Arch was Sabayon, which was Gentoo based, but had a binary package manager. It was nice, but still came with an entire desktop environment and their own installed programs on it that I didn't want in the first place. I used it for about a year even, but eventually just decided to go

    back to a console environment. The lack of interest in compiling brought me to Archlinux. I'm not sorry I tried it. :)

    Regards,
    Nick

    I'm not exactly sure what you mean there, but you can use the package manager to search for anything you're looking for as well as a complete listing on their site, https://www.archlinux.org/packages/

    If the package is not there, it may be in the AUR (Arch User Repository) at https://aur.archlinux.org which only requires you to download a PKGBUILD file from there, and run "makepkg -si" on it. (the s option is to install any dependencies it needs, and i is to install the package after successful build -- so you don't have to run two separate commands).

    Are you referring to something like.. if you try to unrar something and you don't have unrar installed, some distros will tell you that you need to install

    unrar? Heh, I haven't ran into anything like that before. :)

    As long as it works as good as you make it sound, it sounds perfect!

    I may even try it first on my Raspberry Pi B+ which is still sitting
    in its box waiting for me to figure out HTF to use it lol.

    Give it a shot and let me know when you're switching all your other Linux development over to Arch. :)

    Regards,
    Nick

    very interesting... does it also tell you what package to install whe the command you type isn't available?

    I'm not exactly sure what you mean there, but you can use the package manager to search for anything you're looking for as well as a complete listing on their site, https://www.archlinux.org/packages/

    on my ?ubuntu boxen, if i type in (eg) netstat and it doesn't exist, it'll come back and tell me that i can install it via "sudo apt-get install blah" where "blah" is the package name...

    i've never really gotten the hang of using the command line tools to search
    for what package installed what item or provide an item... uncle google generally comes to the rescue in those cases, though ;)

    I'd like to state for the record: I am not a sock puppet of reapern66. Thank you.

    LOL! Yeah, thats pretty awesome when quoted out of context!

    I sense a tagline...

    What's so exquisite about my Archlinux install? There's not much to it, really. It's my Gentoo running my current hub system that's ridiculous,

    I don't know I thought ArchLinux was just a lot of manual installation,
    which is something I don't have the desire to mess with right now! :)
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I run arch, it's a little work in the begining mainly with just configuration and getting the lan working, after that it's pretty simple like BSD or
    anything you just install the packages you want on top of a nice optimized
    base system. It's all binary so no compiling.
