• TON OF UPDATES

What is going on with Microsoft Windows Update lately??

In the last 2 days, Windows Update has repeatedly bugged me with a 30
KB Quality Service Rollup for Windows 7. If I choose the Install Update,
I get the message that the update was successfully installed...but
moments later, the Windows Update icon is BACK in the taskbar.

And, in the Control Bar (where you choose to shut down or restart), I
keep seeing the Windows Update Shield in "Shut Down". I click on that,
the system shuts down, supposedly installs the update, and powers off.
Well, I power it back on, and after everything comes back up, the
Windows Update Icon is BACK in the taskbar, and the shield is BACK in
    the Control Bar.

It is the same thing each time, and I'm wondering what is going on.

Despite Microsoft's desires, I am NOT upgrading my OS...I'm content
    with Windows 7 32-bit.

Stop the Windows Update service (WUAUSERV) and delete the contents of \Windows\SoftwareDistribution.

It might actually be preferrable to set the Windows Update service to
Disabled, and then only re-enable the service if and when you decide to install the updates.

Always do a full backup before installing ANY update.

There is a file that you can install to stop all nagging to upgrade.
At this sitting I couldn't find the name of it but I'll keep you in
my memory when I stumble across it again.

The name was something like "NOWIN10.xxx".

Your message is also saved in my "Deferred" messages.

    GM Tom,

What is going on with Microsoft Windows Update lately??

In the last 2 days, Windows Update has repeatedly bugged me with a 30
KB Quality Service Rollup for Windows 7. If I choose the Install Update,

Does M$ still really support Windows 7 ?

And, in the Control Bar (where you choose to shut down or restart), I
keep seeing the Windows Update Shield in "Shut Down". I click on that,

It is the same thing each time, and I'm wondering what is going on.

Well, that's your choice. I have never been a friend of Windows but I
don't regret the upgrade from XPpro to Win10pro 32-bit.

I have jumped all versions between XPpro and Win10pro but I wouldn't
trust Windows to run a (my) BBS. I do every once in a while get the blue
screen telling me "Your PC ran into a problem .......". It's not the PC
that has got a problem but apparently Windows 10.

Wise Move on not upgrading to Win 10

I got the itch to upgrade when I received a laptop as XMAS gift from my
eldest grandson working in Stockholm, and found Win10 quite usable.

IT also as it comes in some cases does the same thing.
On the wife's Win 10 machine it keeps downloading an upgrade and
then saying that upgrade not allowed.
I have done multiple tricks from the Internet and nothing has
helped. The roll up Win 10 upgrade still fails.

So far all the upgrades to my stationary PC as well as the laptop with
Win10pro have worked without a hitch.

Well, that's your choice. I have never been a friend of Windows but I
don't regret the upgrade from XPpro to Win10pro 32-bit.

I have been quite happy with Win 10pro since I received a laptop with
Win10pro, to the extent that I even bought a stationary Dell with Win7
on Nov 30 2015 and upgraded it to 10pro while the upgrade was still free

So far all the upgrades to my stationary PC as well as the laptop with Win10pro have worked without a hitch.

I should never have written that. In March things started to happen.

An announcement from M$ told that it would take a long time on my laptop
so I decided to remove the HD-password to avoid running back and forth to
the machine when it wanted to reboot.

The upgrade was successfull and the machine worked OK.

Now the PWRD back again. OK, the previous password wasn't accepted so I
started a new one with a first umlaut letter. That wasn't accepted
because only characters/numerals on an US keyboard were accepted and the accented letter keys didn't send the correct characters.

I did never get that choice of keybs I've seen on many other instances.

Later in march an upgrade came to the stationary machine. That never
came to an end and I have since had to re-install Windows 10pro and am
still installing programs that went out the door because the install
wiped those programmes that were on the C: drive.

I have tried multiple more tricks form the internet and the wife's
machine still refuses to update. something about permissions even
though I was logged in as Administrator.

Now I will probably get the new version of OS/2 instead, and install new versions of Thunderbird (if I can't get the new PMMail for OS/2) and
Firefox, because this OS/2 machine has never failed.
