Howdy!,

A Friend of Mine who lives in the next County has a Acer Chromebook.
He calls (or Email's) me and asks how to do things like:

1. How do I find Windows Games I can Play Online? - Play not Download.
2. How do I find DOS Games I can Play Online?
3. How do I find Linux Games I can Play Online?

He also want to be able to Download Game(s) for Windows (DOS or Linux) and
use a Emulator to Run the Game on the Chromebook.

He knows about WINE being used for UBUNTU but wants me to tell him if
WINE would work for him on the Chromebook.

I told him as far as I know WINE is for Linux

(I know that the Chrome OS "IS" a Linux OS)

so I asked him to look on Google Play Store to see if a Chromebook version
of a WINE type program is available there.

I told him I would try looking at Google Play Store for him to see when I
could find out, so far I haven't found my ROUNDTUIT to do that.

He know I have been playing with computers, (and getting whipped by them)
since 1984 when I bought a C=64, and considers me his 'Tech Person' but I
don't know it all, I just act like I do.

PLUS

I might play a computer game but I'm not a Gamer (He is).

He said he doesn't have any luck finding any Games when he Searches for
them on Google, so I told him about trying to use DuckDuckGo to see if
anything different shows up.

He has, but still can't find what he wants there either.

He told me he also has tried Searching on Yahoo without finding any help.

I sent a URL to a HOWTOGEEK article about putting UBUNTU on a Chromebook.

And told him to be VERY CAREFUL when in the ROOT on his Chromebook,
one slip up and he won't be able to use that computer.

I don't think it's "Live". But an install in a VM might do the trick.


Overview
What you need:

20 minutes for USB installer creation.

To create the USB installer: a PC, Mac or Chromebook running the Chrome browser.

An 8GB (or greater) USB stick


BUT... it is wise to confirm compatibility with their "Certified Models" compatibility guide. However, I do believe that the list does not preclude you
from trying it on the computer want.

It doesn't hurt to be very careful.

of the Prism BBS he could get on using Dial-Up.

That may have been because Janis moved away from this area.

I'm still using XP but I'll still try to keep on learning things as I become interested in learning about it.
By my logging on to a BBS ran on a Windows (DOS probably) pc when I had a Commodore 64 I learned enough about Windows 3.1 to try to help a man at
Church from what I read in the Windows (and later WIN95) echos.

And then where I work got rid of the Texas Instruments Terminal and got the Boss'es old used XT with DOS 2.11 - WITH ALL THE BOOKS FOR IT! when a 286
was put in His Office.

I was in Hog Heaven on the Night Shift using BASIC, after all, BASIC was on
my C=64 and a lot of things I could do at Home I could write in DOS-BASIC
now.

And Then I learned to write simple .BAT Files...

I added Your Initials to the TAGLINE that You used in a message over in
the DOVE echo.

When I saw it mention Geneology I thought of Nancy Backus who writes in
another echo I read and JUST HAD TO write her a message using That TAGLINE.

I didn't know if You created the TAGLINE or Stole it as I did today, but
anyway I added it to my TAGLINE File with Your Initials.

I think He uses the Firefox browser instead of the Chrome browser.
I could be wrong, as I haven't visited Him when the Chromebook was On,

I think a Chromebook also has the Linux Terminal program too, but that may
be too much for him to try to use.
When he lived in my neighborhood I gave him a Linux 7.02 ??? Live CD and
he used that and Wi-Fi'd to his Sister's PC that had a Cable Broadband on it.

Ed, if he can do so, he is welcome to play some of the DOS games on

Java and JavaScript are completely different things. I'll let you research that.

Just google for "online java games" and go from there.

One place that I found worked really well is pogo.com. The last time i looked at
it was over 5 years ago. Meanwhile, they've changed the service a bit, and seems to support previously registered users only now.

Sounds like he has a limited understanding of BBSes. Games on BBSes are traditional, blocky, ascii, etc.. types. Some are based on animations, some are
text-based like RPG's. But many are implemented quite nicely.

Maybe not then. I only have one game I can think of, on Moe's, that is not mostly text based. It is an arcade game like Space Invaders. I think it
runs to slow to really be as much fun as the real thing, though.

Do a Google search? Not being facetious. I know there are some old school
games hosted online.

He also want to be able to Download Game(s) for Windows (DOS or Linux)

If it's a newer Chromebook it will run most android apps. You can search on
the play store but I know there's ibochs, which is a port of bochs x86 emulator; retroarch is available to run some linux stuff. No idea how well either work. AnLinux is supposed to be pretty good.

version of a WINE type program is available there.

Afaik there's no version of Wine for Android.

That website didn't show up in a DuckDuckGo Search I did using the words:

Chrome OS Live CD

but I got over 50 URL's to look through, one of them is about making
your netbook a Chromebook.

There were many sites with Live CD for Chrome OS.

I will take me a while to go through that list.
I will probably first read the pages with help about using Chrome OS on
this XP box.

I don't think it's "Live". But an install in a VM might do the trick.

Using Chrome OS in a VM also came to me last night before I went to sleep. Yes!, I think about computer stuff a lot, even if it is something I can't understand.

I have used Innotek VirtualBox a little bit, like instead of Running UBUNTU 7.02 as a Live CD I Installed it in a Innotek VM, and also some other stuff that I wanted to play with but not install.

If it is a TEXT Game he told me today He isn't interested in the 100 or so
TEXT Games on Mikes Capitol City BBS.

Yes, he isn't interested in the Technical part or wanting to become a BBS
User, he just wants to play GOOD GAMES On-Line.

He told me today he plays Pool On-Line and won TWO sessions of Pool of the
many he played today.
I told him to Email the Link to that Game page so I could look at it.

Before he got the Chromebook he has used Ubuntu, Win3.1 and Win95, then he
got a X-Box system and loved to play Madden Football and a Car Racetrack
game called Frouza (?).
He has had the X-Box, X-Box360 and a X-Box One and wishes he could play
X-Box games on his Chromebook.

I tried Telnet and talked to Mike about my difficulties with it and Mike
told me about a web site I could go to that would grab the packet for me
and send it to me via FTP.

I used that method for a long time and then got a BRIGHT IDEA to make my own FTP Script(s) to GET and PUT .QWK Packets to his BBS.
I run the Script with a .BAT file from a CMD Prompt.

Talk about being LAZY, I AM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Java is somewhat innocuous. Just stick with well-established game sites and you
will be fine.

I never heard of Reformator/Quoter B4.
What Reading Program do You use Reformator/Quoter with?

Reformator/Quoter is designed for folks using newsreaders (like I am for this message) or web-based forums for replying to messages.

The Editor I use with MultiMail for DOS (and was used with SLMR) is the old reliable EDIT.COM .

Then you will have no need for Reformator/Quoter. But it does have some fine tools for "fixing" bad quotes selectively in original messages.

I just tried it.

It is nothing but OpenSUSE with an added Chromium browser. The desktop is branded with a familiar Google Chrome logo. At bootup, it launches the Chromium browser prepopulated with familiar google products.

I do NOT think this will help in your preparedness for learning about a Chromebook.

The OpenSUSE build is 12.2 (from around 2012?) ..I had trouble accessing some updates to install specific "action" games. Even so, those games would likely only be designed around linux OpenSUSE anyway.

For an up to date experience with OpenSUSE, it would be best to grab the latest
version and play with that in Live CD mode if you want. But the environment is
NOT anything like a Chromebook.

How did the play with CHROME OS go? Was it anything like you
expected? Are you using it as a solution on any particular PC?

I have played with demo Chromebooks in stores.
After a couple times using them as Guest and not seeing all that was
available on the Chromebook I created an account with a FAKE name and
a Gmail account I never would need again and didn't see anything that
excited me, so I forgot about wanting one.

What I've read so far looks like the Chromebook seems to be a "Cloud"
computer that NEEDS a internet connection to a Server where MY Files
are stored.

The files I would create on it wouldn't be kept locally, so I'm
UNenthused about trying/buying a Chromebook now.

If I want to share a File with somebody else, I can do that.
If the File is too large to attach to a Email I can make a CD and
send it by mail.

I'm not that cheap - even though my Family tree goes back to a Lady
from Scotland who married a Irishman here in the United States Of
America.

Thanks to You and All the Others Who posted Replies to Me about the
Chromebook.
