If it were me, I'd let it sit for a while as just listed in BACKBONE.NA... Maybe later break them out? I know there were other echos that were actually gated newsgroups in the past like Science, but that one at least doesn't seem to be gated any longer so someone would have to find "the others" <g>. And this
way, Allen's echos will get listed out publically now so people will see the tagnames.

    Take care,

I really enjoy reading the stats from your system... you do one heck
    of a good job!

I am going to pick nits here...

I reviewed the echolist submissions you forwarded here, all of them say direct pickup from you in contrast to adding them to a backbone.

Your echolist submissions imply private distribution as opposed to public distribution.

Therefore I am going to hold off until you can update these listings and clarify?

As you do so, it might be wise to include in the DESCription whether or not that echo is going to be "entangled" with an outside network such as newsgroups?

I believe we will utilize a separate backbone (BACKBONE.INT) to denote echoes such as yours which you seem to be trying to rescue. This will afford systems an ability to distinguish said echoes up to and including avoidance of them for
reasons that have already been expressed.

I await clarification and resubmission of your requests.

    Ross...

I was going to resubmit the ECHOLIST as distributed via the backbone -WHEN- they are distributed by the backbone.

I have at least 5 people waiting on the Stargate Echos for the Backbone distribution.

I have everything ready on my end to submit once I know that they are on the backbone... so I guess you are now forcing my hand to wait until next weeks backnone.na.

If I can get a FIRM confirmation that the echos will be backboned then I will immediately submit my echolist edits.

But as of this moment in time they are not on the backbone therefore not listed
    as so.

Do you see it from my end? Or am I, and the other nodes who want the echos, going to be forced to wait another week?

Please advise what you want me to do... I can honestly say there are interested
in the crafts, stargate and lost echos... and I had advised them we are in process of getting them distributed on the backbone.

    I'll wait your decision.

No you wont have to wait a week, there is no difference between a backbone file
going out on a Sunday versus a monday or any other day.

    Its just ascii.

If I can get a FIRM confirmation that the echos will be backboned then
I will immediately submit my echolist edits.

They will be boned and listed in backbone.na, additionally a supplemental file called backbone.int will be hatched to supplement the echoes listings as being entangled with origins/destinations that are outside of Fidonet.

But as of this moment in time they are not on the backbone therefore
    not listed as so.

You should have listed them as such as you intended to have them distributed, else I would not have had reason to pause and question you and request clarification, do you see it from my end?

Do you see it from my end? Or am I, and the other nodes who want the echos, going to be forced to wait another week?

You have to excuse me because I'm still in a bit of fog from Cheomotherapy... so that no further nits are picked... the Stargate echos now reflect Backbone, Eaststar, and Direct as the distribution. At the time I posted them there was nothing in the distribution tag.

The Gateway keyword is good, but I was thinking along the lines of this:

DESC This echo is being gated between Newsgroups and Fido.

I think with the concerns expressed to you, all things considered being:

    Once dead echo

Issues we have had on both ends of a gating arrangement

Concerns of spam and other things

This could be your way of meeting in the middle.

The backbone isnt requiring this of you, just suggesting.

I am requiring you to change the listing for distribution..

    DISTribution Backbone, EastStar, Direct Pickup

The Eastern Star is just one piece of the North American Backbone, while I might be flattered that you consider me worthy of a separate designation, I am as much part of the backbone as the other 3 systems I am meshed with, no system
    is greater than the whole.

What I do when I list echoes, to avoid ego bruising is on the DIST keyword I simply specify:

    DIST All Backbones

Fairly neutral and generally once the echoes start flowing on the four systems of the NAB, they go on out to others.

    Ross,

I am sure that with this one... there is a lot of learning curve here. I am going to write a GATE-RULE once we get three bots up and running here that will
outline the entire gating process and how a user can help with the spam. As soon as we get the SPAM-Can-Bot, the TROLL-Bot, and the FLAME-Can-Bot up and running users can forward things into the system that will be reviewed and added to the filter.

I don't think that filtering on this scale has ever been attempted on a gateway
before... and I do want everyone to know that everything virus checked, scrubbed, and filtered before they go out... there will be modest rules for the
gateway and will outline everything there I promise.

Ross Cassell -> Allen Prunty wrote:

I will further tweak this into an edit that will be submitted next week. I don't want to bombard Thom's robot any more than I already have today... that is a Darned good idea.

I am having a serious Chemo Therapy migraine tonight and have had a terribly rough day... please excuse the grumpiness... I also have to leave... my best friend will be on the Extreme Home Makeover tonight and we are having a party for him. I -may- be in some of the scenes on the show tonight... have e-listed things as "ADOPTABLE" much like your placeholder. I do not want to hold on to these echos forever... I just want people to know that they are up and running.

Well... like the echos on the echolist you are the one that's visible on the radar screen ... who are these other three stars and who runs them... I did not
mean to slight them in the least... and apologize if I hurt feelings. I have heard Brenda Donovan's name thrown around a couple of times and was overjoyed to hear that she was still around.

I think that the fans of the show will enjoy them. Both of them have very good filters in place and have not had any spam for days now.

You should have listed them as such as you intended to have them distributed, else I would not have had reason to pause and question you and request clarification, do you see it from my end?

Guess I do now... and I appreciate your flexibility... Bruce made us jump through a lot more hoops back in the day.

    Patience my young padewan.

And there will be yet another Starwars movie... that's been confirmed <G>.

Anyhow Extreme Home Makeover is about to start and I'm on my Laptop over here... don't want to slight my friend this is -his- show and I am honored to be here... besides I'm the official popcorn maker tonight.

Please give me a chance to help with the backbone.int since I know exactly where everything is gated from. It's the least that I can do to help out.

    See above.

Please advise what you want me to do... I can honestly say there
are interested in the crafts, stargate and lost echos... and I
had advised them we are in process of getting them distributed on
    the backbone.

Are all the echoes you recently requested for addition, going to be

If so, might be interesting to create another list? just a thought..

Thats what I was thinking and the impetus behind the question..

    BACKBONE.NA
BACKBONE.INT (Int short for Internet, to imply lists and groups)

How about BACKBONE.NG (for newsgroups, of course <g>)
    and BACKBONE.LS (for listservs)

    BACKBONE.NO

It would be easier to differentiate NGs and LSs that way. My system can
handle most of that but I don't have an Internet connection to it (and am unlikely to get one absent a winning lottery ticket, thus far the only drawback to living out here in the sticks).

That might be well and good... but the only lists that I gate is a four way gate... it comes in via alt.genealogy and two other genealogy listserves ... and it goes FOUR ways. It would be better to have one file that details all the directions it goes out.

Bob... I have unlimited long distance... Once I get my POPs line reinstalled I will gladly call and deliver if it would save you some $$

    GATEway rec.music.beatles.moderated Filtered

errrmmm... this is not what the GATEWAY keyword is supposed to be used for :?

Gateways (GATE) - A text field for the listing of gates to
other zones, nets, domains, etc. (35
    characters)

the above entry you have is not the gating system... it is the original newsgroup name... if your system is the gateway then you could list it here... personally, in the areas that i maintain that are gated, i don't do this, IIRC...

you'd be better to list that info in the DESC lines ;)

No thanks. I'm quite happy with the feed I get from Jeff Smith. I am *not* happy with Qwest, but I can't do anything about that, they're the only game around - by law, the company in Emerson can't extend their lines the mile
or so from the boundary to my house. Qwest has nearly all of the rural
phones in Iowa and Nebraska - and probably west of the Mississippi and
north of Oklahoma. My house is quite literally at the end of the phone cable, the other end of it is at Qwest's automated switch (there's no office there, just
a little building with the switch in it) in Malvern, IA, about 12 miles away.

I have that here as well, one thing I like about Bellsouth over Qwest. YEs I had their service when I was an Iowan as well. WIll be glad when Allen gets his
pots working again <g>. WIll be able to crash netmail him.

KNow that feeling. Even if you get into one of the other phone companies, such
as McLeod in eastern Iowa the lines are still maintained by qwest.
