• RALFAN - RAILFANS - TRAINS

From Al Kaiser@1:142/926 to All on Sunday, July 10, 2016 00:34:14
Hope this is the place to ask.

At one time there were a number of Echomail areas for railfans. One was mostly a report on Amtrak and it operations, delay, reports of issues ect. I believe posted by people who had access to those reports.

Also one for Railfans where people could talk about their experiences with travel, talk about classic railroads, museuems, shows things like that.

Also one for Model Railroaders, I think that was the Trains one.

I'm wondering if anyone is interesed in bringing any of those back? And how
do you do it? I ask because I'm about to go, (at the end of July), on a trip from CT to Memphis by Amtrak and would love to be able to report about how it was and what I think of the services.

Also a fun thing to read of others experiences too.

Hope others are interested in these also.

Yes I remember those, but this is the area to request established areas to be added to the background. Since these echoes are long defunct you may want to go to a sysop chat echo like FN_SYSOP and see if there is any interest in
    that.

A lot of topics have been concentrated into other echoes. You may want to subscribe to MEMORIES and discuss train stuff there. That area would welcome the discussion and if it gets going pretty well then you can spin off a railroad echo.

Unfortunately there's not as many people left in fidonet... and we have
always had our trolls... trust me, we have the same trolls of old and because we don't have as many participants the trolls seem to be louder than ever (especially in the sysop and political areas).

DO NOT let anyone stifle you Al, this is what we need to get fidonet going again. USENET is having a comeback and I will be happy to look at what railroad areas I can gate in for you. You are welcome to pick up what I can come up with here from me.

Not sure, but I run a Trains and Railroads Ham Radio Net on Monday
nights, except for between Memorial Day and Labor Day (when the net is
on summer vacation). However, you have to be a licensed ham radio operator
    to participate.

Mike Powell (1:2320/105) has a Railfans echo on his system, but I'm
not sure if it's FIDONet or not. I get my GT Power and Autosport echoes
    from him.

But, I'd be interested in a railfans echo. I'm also co-moderator of the Railfans R Us group on Facebook.

I found two very active usenet newsgroups.

alt.railroad is for "real railroads" where they talk about the actual trains and history.

Then REC.MODELS.RAILROAD is a very active hobbyist model railroad newsgroup.

I have both of these gated and have thousands of posts.

If you guys are interested, you can pick them up here at 2320/100 all I ask
is -NO TEST MESSAGES- it goes out over usenet and that is considered spam you will get flamed. My gate is fully functional two way and your post will hit the net within minutes of it getting here.

I also have tons of other gated newsgroups. My technology is pretty strong
in zapping sporge and spam. It gets the worst of it but I have to tweak the filters and with my medical stuff don't have time to. Eye #2's surgery is Wednesday.

rec.foods.cooking is the most popular group... have it here anyone's welcome just crash me an 8 character session password and i'll set you up with that
and the areafix password will be the same.

Looks like there is some interest. I started thinking of trying to bring
all three interest, railfanning, reports and news stories, and the model railroading in one echo.

Anyway it could be done, I'd support it.

Interesting. I don't think think I have any newsgroups set up here
    right now.

I'll have to get with you via netmail (or you can netmail me at 1:19/33
(I'm a regional independent, as there are no other BBS's in Arkansas)). However, I have to do errands with my elderly Mom today (she turns 90
this fall), and storms are forecast here Friday through Saturday. So, I
likely will be delayed a bit on that.
